Introduction
This is a project in school and the topic i chose is the dakota war of 1862. The warlasted throughout 1862 but lasted 16 months in 1862 to 1863 the state Minnesota at the time the state was four years old had already had two wars in their own backyard! The Dakota people were also called the sioux and people liked to call the war the Sioux uprising. During the Dakota war over 800 soldiers died and many civilians were killed. And something I l think is really cool is that the Dakota had a 1,665,000 dollar empire and 24,000,000 dollars worth of agricultural land and that is cool. The war started 1862 august 17. The government didn't pay their pending annual payment to the Dakota and that is how the Dakota War started. If wondering pending annual payment is is the Dakota gave government land and that meant government had to pay the Dakota money and they didn't pay so the war started. Murders married some dakota women and then killed some guards in Dakota territory.
Who Were Some Of The Important People?
One of the important people in the Dakota war is Little Crow He was a descendent of Chief Little Crow Dakota territory 19 king and the ruler. Crows real first name is Taoyateduta but people called him little crow because of his dads name Malvin little Crow and dad had three wives and had to kill his half brother to keep his family alive. Crows dad was born May 16 1942 at Whitecap first nation reserve. And the school Melvin went to didn't teach history or culture.
George Quinn was 19 when he decided to go against the whites when he was 19. HE moved to a lower agency area. Some of the indians would say if you didn't join they would just kill you. George understood both sides but decided to join the indians. Also if you were a christian you couldn't be a indian. George thought that schools should tell the truth of what happened during the wars and thought Little crow was a reluctant leader.

How Did The Event Occur?
The Dakota War Of 1862 Started august 17 1862 the war has many names like The Sioux Uprising or Sioux War or the U.S. Dakota War of 1862. It has been around 150 years since the war started. In the war shaped minnesota into what it is today. The event was caused because of the government. The government said hey we will pay you money for land Dakota people said yes and gave them the land for the money. Well that is called annual payment and the government did spend their pending annual payment and that didn't make the Dakota people happy. Also to make matters worse four indians helped start the war too. They killed part of a white family over eggs, they fled to their village and spread the word and that helped start the war some people joined the indians and some joined the whites.
Were And When Did The Event Occur?
The Dakota war started August 17 1862 in Spring over pending annual payment four indians and eggs. When the war ended the result was hundreds of warriors dead and a moment in history the "Minnesota Massacre" that ended the war 38 indians hanged to end the war. (see drawing at top of page for better detail) Now their is a memorial in Mankato in memory of that sad event.
What Is The Time Period Of The Event
In 1862 The Dakota War Of 1862 started. This war was a civil war the four indians that stole the eggs and killed part of the family that have the farm were killed by Dakota warriors in August 17 1862 when the war started. Two of the four indians argued because they found a house and the house had eggs one of the indians took some and one of the others thought they shouldn't and the indian that took them called him a coward the indian got mad and said he would kill the owner of the place they ended up killing his wife too. In August 18 1862 five settlers murdered by Dakota warriors and attacks in Upper Sioux And the Dakota agencies, and other settlements. Also that day a ambush at Redwood Terry and a beginning of Chippewa Disturbance at Bull Lake. In August 19 1862 the first attack on New Ulm Sibley appointed to command volunteer troops. August 20 1862 the main attack on Fort Ridgely. August 23 1862 second attack on New Ulm. September 2 1862 Battle Of Birch Coulee. September 3 1862 Skirmish at Acton and the attack on Fort Abercrombie. September 6 1862 second attack on Fort Abercrombie. September 23 1862 battle of Wood Lake. September 26 1862 surrender of captives at Camp Release. September 28 1862 Military Commission appointed to try indians who participated in the uprising. December 26 1862 the Minnesota Massacre or 38 sioux indians executed in Mankato.
What Are The Main Events Of The Event.
Here are a few quotes: "Like a destructive storm, the war struck suddenly and spread rapidly." A huge part of the Dakota war was the government. The Dakota's largest amount of land was taken away from them by the government and the government had to pay them but they didn't. Dakota civilians started to get desperate because of the annually payment they didn't get the money to pay for things. Those four indians when he was called a coward he said he wasn't and swore he would kill the owner of a house but the other indian didn't care and said he would die with the indian.
How Did The Event End?
The war ended badly in December 36, 38 Dakota indians were hanged in mankato. It is Minnesota's largest mass execution in Minnesota history. After that the government ordered all Minnesotans to leave Minnesota. But the Minnesota massacre was ignored! For years nobody cared for years on end but that didn't last forever still Minnesota's pray for the Dakota war. Now with memorials in Mankato people can remember the "Sioux Outbrake" better."
What Happened After The War?
When the government god Minnesota to move most moved to South Dakota because of a ice age type thing. The president at the time let 177 surviving prisoners free to go from jail. In July 3 1863 a farmer saw and shot Little Crow ands was rewarded 500 dollars for it! People say it lasted more years because of people bringing fights inside Dakota bounderys and that lasted 1863 through 1864
What Did People Think Of The Event?
I personly think that the war had a point and the government should always stay true and what if they just gave the land back because they didn't pay? But John LaBatte thinks the problem start red with Dakota people fled into canada and there was central Dakota.
How Is The Event Remembered Today?
Some people still remember the Dakota war by their grandparents or grate grandparents. They sometimes try to teach their kids or grandkids lessons like the Dakota language, or religion, or maybe the "Indian Ways." Sometimes people have holidays. A man who new nothing about Dakota history worked at a old library he learned many things that most people wold't know.
